Cubs are born with closed eyes that open at about 3 weeks old. They are totally helpless. Lion litters can be large, although the average number of cubs is about 4 cubs per litter. When the pregnant lioness is ready to give birth, she removes herself from the pride. Then she finds a suitable, well-hidden den site. Den site are usually found in thick bush, caves or gulleys. She only returns to the pride when the cubs are old enough.
